Every time we look outside or open our eyes chemical and physical changes are all around us. Four labs our class performed showed this to us in many different ways. To the right is the process names for physical changes. When our class melted our birthday candle it underwent a physical and chemical change. The physical change was when the candle melted from a solid to a liquid . As you can see on the chart to your right it did soon become a liquid. The chemical change occurred when the candle burned. Basically the chemical build up was changed and that is what a chemical change is. In our next lab my group mixed vinegar and baking soda together to form carbon a non-flammable gas. This gas extinguished the fire. This information can help us in the future because know we know that carbon can be used to put out flames. If you have a kitchen fire and know water is available you can just mix to two ingredients and smother the oxygen around the flames. Our next lab was roasting marshmallows and what we did was put a Bunsen Burner underneath our marshmallow and set them ablaze. We found out that the marshmallow melts while over a fire. The fire changed the chemical make up of the marshmallow and made it very gooey. Our final lab was heating sugar in a beaker. When the sugar heated it turned into brownish yellowish liquid. When we kept heating it the liquid soon evaporated leaving us with black powdery stuff. After inspecting the black stuff we learned that it was carbon left in the beaker. This can help us in the future because understanding chemical and physical changes will help our daily lives. For example, if we do not want our car to rust we cannot let the car be exposed to water and oxygen.
